WASHINGTON – One of Hong Kong’s top competition enforcer says, “If I could transport one aspect of the Hong Kong Competition Commission to the US, it would be the emphasis on advocacy.” Formerly a senior Department of Justice antitrust official during the Obama administration, Brent Snyder is helping Hong Kong create and grow a successful competition agency in his role as its chief executive officer, a position he assumed in September 2017. In this interview, recorded at the 2018 ABA Spring Antitrust Meeting, Snyder discusses how his geographically small jurisdiction leans on advocacy to create a culture of compliance, and shares his secrets to building a competent and thriving antitrust agency.
